There are such tree species along forest destinations, in arboretums and on the streets which could pose danger to our properties and also our lives in case of adverse weather conditions due to their health problems.Damage is mostly inflicted by fallen trees and bigger branches broken from the crown. These incidents can be traced back to the internal decay of wood in roothead and boles. That's why it's significant to examine the inner wood of older trees or those in worse condition around us. Close attention must be devoted to those species causing direct damage to our properties or even our lives, especially if external signs (slime fux, fungal fruiting body, holes, etc.) indicates the poor inner condition of boles.

The ArborSonic 3D Acoustic Tomograph, used in our Institute, detects the decayed or hollow parts of trees. Conclusions on the stability of the assessed trees are drawn from the place and extensiveness of decay. The examination is non-destructive. There is no need to take a sample from the bole or to bring down certain boles to test them. The applied technology is based on the internal sound-velocity measurement. During the examination, the transducers installed to the circumference of the bole are tapped, at the same time, the device measures the sound velocity between certain transducers with microsecond precision. If there are decayed parts or holes in the bole, the travel time drops. The device transmits the measured data to the computer, and the software displays the figure of velocity distribution in the examined cross-section. Measurements at several heights can be assembled into a 3D model of the inner structure of the bole.
